East Austin Studio Tours 2019 is finally here! Its exciting, overwhelming and a constant sense of the “fear of missing out” because I just cant be every where at once. However, I stepped out into a couple events on Friday and by far my favorite was at Mass Gallery featuring the exhibition These Lessons. This exhibition includes a total of three featured artists; Brooke Burnside, Diego Mireles Duran and Carlos Rosales-Silva. Together, they brought an explosion of color that instantly brought a smile, from ear to ear, for me.
Brooke Burnside presents nine pieces of chalk pastels that were executed seamlessly on paper. Her content focused on architectural structures that were powered by her mixture of warm and cool colors. Each piece was complimented by smooth-transitional gradience and contrasted with directional lines and forms. What I loved most about her work is that she brought the imagery and color all the way to the ripped edges of the paper and displayed each piece masterfully in shadow box frames–a personal favorite for mine.
Carlos Rosales-Silva transformed the gallery space by painting directly onto the walls, 3 large scale arches that harmonized the trio, with a punch of color. He also contributed two hanging pieces into the show. Both pieces included the incorporation of acrylic plastic, acrylic paint as well as a unique incorporation of decorated pebbles glue atop one of his canvas. His variance in mediums articulated a sense of depth and texture into his pieces.
No surprise here to say that Diego M Duran delivered the goods. This guy is bursting with panache. His pieces are an outward extension of his inner-vivid world expressed upon carved wooden panels. The deliberation of his uniquely formed canvases conveys his level of ingenuity and craftsmanship. On top of the panels lays bright, fantastical colors that brings the extension of the world to your eyes. The precision of each piece was also apparent in the multi-textural aspect of each painting along with the distinctive shapes of the wooden cutouts.
